videoCapture() cannot open specific png images (python/windows)

I'm using Opencv 3.4.0 with python 2.7 cv2.VideoCapture() usually works for images but I've had a few instances where it could not open specific png images, while cv2.imread() will open those files without any problems. If I resave the file using photoshop or paint without changing anything, it works. So it seem to do with the actual file itself. What could be the reason?
